Our Unforgettable Visit to Samui Elephant Home
During our honeymoon in Thailand, we were eager to create memories that would last a lifetime. One of the most meaningful experiences we had was our visit to the Samui Elephant Home, a sanctuary devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating elephants. This visit not only deepened our appreciation for these majestic creatures but also highlighted the importance of ethical wildlife tourism.

A Heartfelt Welcome
As soon as we arrived at the sanctuary, we were surrounded by lush greenery and a sense of peace. The sanctuary has been a conservation facility for over four years, with a focus on wildlife, environmental protection, and supporting local communities. The staff greeted us warmly and shared their mission, which had recently evolved into the Samui Elephant Home Caring & Education Center (SCEC). This rebranding emphasises their commitment to ecotourism, allowing visitors to gain knowledge and understanding while enjoying new experiences.
Feeding the Elephants
One of the best parts of our day was preparing food for the elephants. We got to chop up fresh fruit and veggies, which was way more fun than we expected! After making their meals, we waited with excitement for the elephants to come around. When they did, it was magical.
Armed with their favourite snacks, we got to experience the gentle way they accepted the food. It felt like we were connecting with these gentle giants in a very special way. Each interaction was a reminder of the compassion these animals deserve, highlighting the significance of treating them with respect.
Exploring the Sanctuary
After feeding time, we embarked on a tour of the elephants’ hangout spots, where we observed them in their natural environment. Watching them interact with one another was a true delight, and we felt privileged to witness their playful spirits. However, just as we were immersed in this beautiful experience, the rain caught up with us, so we headed back to the main hall.
After the elephants’ lunch, it was our turn. We were treated to some delicious snacks and coffee, while chatting with the staff about the elephant. The staff continued to share insights about the elephants and the ongoing efforts at Samui Elephant Home, making our meal both enjoyable and educational.
Bathing with Elephants
Once the rain let up, we had the chance to bathe the elephants. For those of us who preferred to watch from afar, we could help wash the elephants instead, which was equally fun. Seeing them play in the water was so much fun, and it was nice to know they’re in a safe and loving environment.
